HOW I PICK MY ROTATION – A DENIM COLLECTORS DELEMA

As an obsessed denim collector I have about 60pairs of jeans in my personal collection… and counting. At this rate I’ll probably have about 100 pairs by the year 2019. I am both proud and embarrassed of my denim collection. I spend a lot of time with my jeans. Taking pictures, writing about them… smelling them. But then it comes to deciding which ones to wear. 😐 As my collection grew this started taking longer and linger each day. I had to come up with a system.

This is how I pick my denim rotation out of 60 pairs of jeans I really like. I have a few phases that help me narrow it down.

Phase 1: The weather. Summertime in LA it can average between upper 90 to 110F, so anything 16oz and above starts to become very uncomfortable. So basically about half the year my heavyweight denim is in storage. Because of this I try to always wear the heaviest denim the weather will allow, never going mid or light weight in winter. This cuts my denim collection option into thirds at any given time.

Phase 2: Now that I have it down to about 20 pairs at any given time I rate the pairs with a system I’ve come up with. There are 3 cattagories that are rated: 1. Fit, 2. Fabric, 3. Details. I believe that is the order of importance when it comes to deciding on your favorite pair. Here is what it looks like.

I always start grading each category with a full score. Here I will Grade a pair of Oni 622 Greencast, one of my current faves.

  • Fit – Perfect fit is 10, if there is a fit issue I dock 1 points. If it is not my preferred cut type I dock 2 points even if it fits perfectly for that cut.
  • Fabric – 8/8
  • Details – 5/5 (A detail I don’t like gets docked a whole point, if there are just not enough details but the ones that are there are good I dock .5 points)

Total score 22.5/30

I rate and organize my jeans according to their score. If at the end of the day I have:

  • 4 – 22.5’s
  • 1 – 22’s
  • 4 – 21.5’s
  • 5 – 21’s

So I look at this, and right off the bat I can sell or put into storage the 5 jeans that have a score of 21. I’d keep the 21.5’s and 22’s in a bin at home incase I felt the need for more variety. The 22.5’s would be my main rotation and would pick one out of those five to wear at least 3 or 4 days a week.

This rating system works really well for when you are trying to decide on buying that new pair you’ve been eyeing.

Try it out and see if it works for you. Let me know how it goes!
